That’s roughly how this one went.

The Dominican Republic Story Dad Still Can’t Live Down

Late flight. Crowded airport. A stranger walking up and asking if we’re the family he’s looking for. A van running outside. Dad, disappearing to sign paperwork none of us could see.

“Dad. Do you actually know where we’re going?”

“Not really.”

That answer’s been a running joke in this family ever since.

Scarlett’s Hawaii Story Somehow Got Worse

The story hasn’t gotten any less disgusting with retelling. If anything, it’s gotten worse.

It started at an ostrich attraction, back before any of this was a running joke.

Then Aiden took her to a zoo, picked up a bird with zero warning, and set it directly on her shoulder.

Bella did not thank him.

She still hasn’t.

The Best Stories Always Led to Another Story

The van story isn’t even finished before somebody’s already thinking about pastries. From there it’s a short jump to a beach in Hawaii, and from there, somehow, a bird at a zoo.

None of these four stories connect on paper. A rental-car mix-up has nothing to do with a bakery. A shoe has nothing to do with an ostrich. But somehow, each one kept pulling the next one out of somebody’s memory — like they were never actually filed away separately in the first place.

Why We Could’ve Kept Talking For Another Hour

By the end, none of it was really about the trips anymore.

By the time the bird shows up, the van story is barely a memory of its own anymore. It’s just where this one started.

That’s the funny thing about family stories.

You never really finish one.

You just end up remembering another — the same thing happens when the group gets going on their craziest school stories instead of travel ones.
